Sofía Estela Oyarzún is a Chicago-based visual journalist, currently earning her Bachelor’s in Photojournalism at Columbia College Chicago. Her Chilean-American background has inspired her work ethic and curiosity, both imperative qualities in her bilingual work. Her time living in both countries has prompted her hunger to surround herself in unfamiliar circumstances to learn from and share various communities’ life stories.
Her work can be found at The Columbia Chronicle/La Crónica, where she developed her core skills of on-the-ground reporting on immigration operations in Chicago and Latino culture in the city, as well as her up-close photo and video skills, capturing emotions, moments and stories that others might overlook. More work can be found through her other freelance and internship opportunities at Univisión, The Daily Herald, La Raza, Borderzine, Just Released Magazine, Conexión Migrante and more.
Oyarzún strives to apply her skills to an international scale as a foreign correspondent, covering culture, conflict and connection around the world.
